Choosing and Evaluating Different Sociological Methods

March 17, 2014 by John Amy

ChoosingResearchMethodWorking in groups of 3 or 4, choose two of the following topics:

  • Poverty
  • Unemployment
  • Divorce
  • Crime

For each of your chosen topics, decide on four possible methods you might use to investigate that topic.

You should include one method from each of the following categories:

  • a quantitative primary method
  • a quantitative secondary source
  • a qualitative primary method
  • a qualitative secondary source

When you have decided on your choice of methods, discuss how you might put them into practice.

Which method do you think would be most appropriate and useful in each case?

Explain why you think it would be most useful.
